Welcome to our favourite reads for September. Each month some of ARRA’s members will tell you a little bit about one of the books they’ve recently read and loved.
These are not full reviews of the books, just honest opinions on why they enjoyed the book so much. Hopefully one of these will strike a chord with you.
So, we asked our members to tell us about some of their favourite reads for September …
The Station, Vol 1 and 2 by Mel A Rowe (rural romance)
I started reading volume 2 and after about 40 pages in realised I was reading volume 2 and went back and started reading vol 1. The story was so engaging on so many levels, and I always love reading about outback Australia especially from someone who actually lives out there. I really fell in love with all the characters and never wanted it to end. There’s just something about the way Mel A Rowe writes about the outback that makes you fall in love with it. I hope one day I get to go on a long drive up through the middle of Oz and really see first hand the beauty that she describes. [Simone, NSW]
The Parfit Knight by Stella Riley (Rockliffe #1) (historical romance)
My big discovery this month was a new-to-me historical romance writer called Stella Riley. I started with The Shadow Earl but soon realised it was part of a series, so I bought the first book in her Rockliffe series, The Parfit Knight . I devoured it in one sitting, then bought the rest of that series and thoroughly enjoyed each one. The books are set in the 1770s, where men wear silk, velvet and brocade—think The Duke of Avon in Georgette Heyer’s These Old Shades . Highly recommended. [Anne, Vic]
Blame It on Rio by Suzanne Brockmann (Tall, Dark and Dangerous #14) (romantic suspense/romantic comedy)
I enjoyed this final book in the series, even though it is more romantic comedy than romantic suspense. We get the same wonderful sense of camaraderie between the SEAL team members, and the usual witty banter. With an attractive hero and heroine, both with a side of what some might call ‘crazy’ <g>, some real issues, and a gentle secondary romance, we get closure for the whole team. My only problem is that I feel the need to go back and read the series from the beginning. [Deb, NSW]
The Things We Left Behind by Lucy Score (Knockemout #3) (contemporary romance)
I listened to this one on Audible. I have been waiting for Lucian and Sloan’s story and was not disappointed. I loved the interaction between them in the previous two books, getting their back story was finally good to hear. The small town shenanigans with all the characters in their group is always fun. In the end I am glad that the culprit(s) have been caught and dealt with. I don’t think I want to go through that again! The bonus epilogue was terrific. Love a good bonus epilogue! [Linda, WA]
The Dark Calling by Kresley Cole (Arcana Chronicles #6) (fantasy romance)
I have been holding on to this book for the longest time, because I just knew we’d be left with another cliffhanger and I wanted the final book in my hands before I started it. And I was right! It was a great read, but the last scene made me cry. Evie and Aric and Jack. Sigh. This love triangle is probably the best I’ve ever read and I really can’t tell how it is going to end. But either way I’m pretty sure it is going to break my heart. Now to steel myself for the final story. [Debbie, ACT]
Second Chance Love in Point Perry by Joanne Speirs (contemporary romance)
This is a fantastic debut, beautifully written, filled with so many emotions. Be sure to keep the tissues handy because you will need them as we get to know Erin and Tom and the wonderful characters who form such a lovely community in Point Perry. Come along for a rollercoaster ride to such a gorgeous HEA. I loved Erin, Tom and Carter. I do highly recommend this one. Joanne has created a wonderful setting for the start of a series, the characters are so lovable, don’t miss this one. [Helen, NSW]
Her Off-Limits Single Dad by Marion Lennox (contemporary romance)
I truly enjoyed this book. First of all I loved the medical stuff with a paramedic and a doctor in a remote community, all knowing and caring for each other. The romance was an utter heartbreaker with impossible odds, my goodness. And I loved the dogs even though I’m a cat person! Off to read the sequel, The Italian, His Pup and Me by Alison Roberts. [Malvina, NSW]
