The Greatest Why
Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord ,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
Psalm 1:1-2
We had a 180 happen in our homeschool this past week that had me in grateful tears.
When I first started the homeschool journey three years ago, I was shocked to learn that my then 3rd grader was already so indoctrinated by evolution theory he was convinced that God and science could not both be correct. Even though he has been in church as long as school, he questioned my beliefs with squinted eyes and a raised eyebrow.
I knew that the schools teach evolution, they even did when I was in Elementary (so many years ago now.) But I believed that being raised in a Christian home, going to Sunday school, and reading the Bible with your kids would override the pushing of their beliefs. So I was shaken.
I prayed that night after our discussion. I had done my best to share my beliefs but had been unsuccessful in even having him question his very set mind. I did not know what to do, but I felt God tell me to leave it and be patient in prayer.
He is a super-intelligent, deep-thinking little man, so God knew he needed to come to his own conclusions lest I push him away. So I prayed for wisdom and patience to leave it in God's hands.
Just a few short months later, COVID-19 sent all of the kids home for my experience in homeschooling. And another few short months after that, when the kids could come back, I knew I was not to send them back. I was to homeschool them instead. So I purchased a Christian homeschool curriculum and prayed for patience because I needed it, and we started our journey.
From the first God gave me the idea to teach the boys that science is the study of God's creation and how He made it work. So we started with that premise and have kept it up for the past few years studying ocean life, geology, weather patterns, and even all the creepy crawlies that God made one October.
This year we have decided to physics for science. Both of my boys lean toward engineering and want to do something in that field. So we bought God's Design - Physical World curriculum by Master Books (see link below) and we are loving it!
Three days in, almost three years to the day we read, "Many evolutionists claim that the stars and planets were formed through a process that took billions of years. But none of the evolutionary ideas can explain where the energy came from to begin with" (God's Physical Design, Masterbooks.)
And with squinty eyes and a raised eyebrow, my brilliant son says, "So they can't explain where energy comes from?"
I reply, "Guess not," because truth be told I am learning physics right along with them.
"Wow," he scoffs in his new, very 12-year-old-know-it-all way, "I wonder what their excuse for that one."
And time stopped as the Kingdom of heaven came right into our kitchen. My eyes misted and I couldn't speak.
My little creationism mocker had become the mocker of evolution theory just as God promised.
Three years of praying for his heart. Three years of patience. Three years of teaching
science from a Biblical worldview, and God showed me the most important why to choose to homeschool.
There is no greater why than our kid's souls.
But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval. John 6:27.

Truth to Encourage
Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
Psalm 1:1-2
The Bible encourages us not to "walk in step with the wicked, or stand with sinners, or sit in the company of mockers," but rather meditate on God's word day and night. This is true for our children as well. Unfortunately, public schools have taken God out and put evil in. When we send them to public school for many hours per day, we are sending them to the company of mockers at best, and to walk with the wicked at worst.
If you have been feeling the nudge to get your kids out of public school and homeschool instead, please let me encourage you to follow that nudge and do it! Parents raising up their kids in the way they should go has always been God's design and He will bless your decision and the work you put in to meditate on His law with your kids day and night!
