A Midlands Opportunity

Next month on the 16th of November, I’ll be interviewing both Steven Dunne and Tom Mead at The Quad in Derby. After interviewing Tom on my own author page about his debut book, The Death of a Conjuror, I offered to do a live event with him about his second book, The Murder Wheel and during our conversations Tom mentioned Steven Dunne as an author local to both of us, who kindly agreed to join us at the event at The Quad. So in order to prepare for the event, I read his latest Damen Brook book, Death do us Part.

This should be an intriguing event to interview the two authors on, as they seemingly cover two different sides of the genre; one of golden age locked rooms and in Dunne’s case, police procedural.

Being the 6th book in the series, the character relationships between the police protagonist and his family and colleagues was complex. Given what I’m just about to do with my own first novel, that I’m writing on a National Centre for Writing course, talking about family dynamics will be an interesting angle to discuss.

When an elderly couple is found dead, both shot, Brook’s brought in off leave to investigate, as the SIO on the other case in the book is about to retire. This is a complex, twisty tale, which by the end will have you realising that all of the clues were there. Clues are one distinctive element that I’ll probably bring up during the conversation, as both the police procedural sub genre and the golden age mysteries have clues at the heart and Tom’s style is to provide you with a list of clues at the end and where they come in. As I’m constructing my own mystery, it’ll be interesting to find out how two different authors, at either end of the genre, interweave their clues to allow the reader to solve the mystery. Come and join us at The Quad in Derby on the 16th.
