The World Builder
The earth is the Lord ’s, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it;
for he founded it on the seas
and established it on the waters.
Psalm 24:1-2
I never thought my kids playing Minecraft would drive home a key belief about God. But that is precisely what happened this week.
As we were driving home from the grocery store we were in conversation about what is right and wrong and who gets to decide. I can't remember why we started the conversation. Probably because mid-way through my 12-year-old blew me away with his understanding.
I had been explaining that I think it is reasonable to think that because God made the whole world, He knows how it works best. I was also explaining that the Bible is a lot of revelation from God to us about how it works best.
This is when my Minecraft-playing theologian jumped in and said, "Like in Minecraft, when I build a world, I know how it works."
Ha! I love this kid.
"Yes! Great analogy, buddy" I proclaimed excitedly, leaning back to give him a fist bump before the light turned green again.
Then, I used his analogy to further drive in the point.
"Can you imagine if you built a whole world in Minecraft, and your little brother or one of your friends you joined with tried to say that your world works differently than how it does?"
They both were listening, so I continued.
"This is what a lot of people are doing today. They have decided that they know best what is right and wrong and how the world works. They don't follow God's rules, and then proclaim themselves right. But I think that since God made the whole world, and us humans, He knows what is best. So, I try and follow Him and what He says in His Word."
Then there were a few deer on the side of the road, (SQUIRREL!,) so the conversation was immediately over but my heart was still soaring.
My kids never cease to amaze me with their understanding! I am just so glad God has given me the opportunity to join Him in guiding them toward truth through homeschooling and everyday life.
Truth to Encourage
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. Deut 6:6-9
The Bible encourages us to teach our children about God in all the places. At home, when you are out, and all day long.
I have found that this is so much easier to do as I homeschool. It is amazing how many learning opportunities come up throughout the day because we are all together most of every day. But also, because I know what we are learning (since I am teaching it,) I see opportunities to show them the concept in other parts of our life.
If you have been feeling the nudge to get your kids out of public school and homeschool instead, please let me encourage you to follow that nudge and do it! Parents raising up their kids in the way they should go has always been God's design and He will bless your decision and the work you put in to meditate on His law with your kids day and night!
