My week with Dhand

This week has been the culmination of a highly complex year, in which I’ve finished two books in draft, published my first book and started to take it on tour. After several lone talking events at libraries, today was the first of two events this month where I’ve been on stage with a number of authors on an equal basis. But given who I was with today , AA Dhand, Vaseem Khan and Abir Mukherjee, I feel really proud. To be on stage with three massive authors in the industry, whom I greatly respect for their prowess in bringing complex issues to light without preaching to their audience and providing different forms of entertainment within the crime genre.



AA Dhand provides the fast paced thriller with an unusual police protagonist and two crucial pillars of his series, Harry’s wife and his brother, Ronnie. These relationships came to a complex conclusion in the fourth in the Virdee series, which I finished after being on a panel with Dhand, today. When Harry’s wife is inside a mosque trying to uncover a likely bomb, how much more dramatic could you make an 18 hour plot line? With so many stories concluded in this book, it just shows that you can have a series covering one complex theme for an extended period and it work well. I’m really looking forward to the TV adaptations that will be out next year, written by Dhand himself.



I really enjoyed this week, as I managed to finish three books by one author in quick succession for the first time, whilst still working on my own on a course. It’s probably the busiest I’ve been and I really enjoy it, including going down to just outside Sandwell, in the middle of storm Ciaran. I feel like today I’ve truly earned the badge of being a full time author. Thanks so much to Amit, Abir and Vaseem for such a brilliant day. I hope everything goes well with them and I’m really looking forward to reading their next books.
