Favourite reads: Oct 2023

Welcome to our favourite reads for October. Each month some of ARRA’s members will tell you a little bit about one of the books they’ve recently read and loved.
These are not full reviews of the books, just honest opinions on why they enjoyed the book so much. Hopefully one of these will strike a chord with you.
So, we asked our members to tell us about some of their favourite reads for October …
The Runaways by Devney Perry (books #1-5) (contemporary romance)
Fortunately I had a couple of long haul flights recently and I was able to get through all five books in this delightful series. I simply could not wait to get back to listening. Six teenagers, all runaways from difficult homes, find themselves living in Lou’s junkyard until they turn 18. I loved the overriding theme of the Cadillac, and the sweet HEAs. The 29 hours of audio time was so worth it! The bonus epilogue is absolutely fantastic. I actually was so sad this series ended! I loved Every. Single. Story! [Linda, WA]
Summer in Skagway by Katy Regnery (contemporary romance)
This book was short compared to some, and very light-hearted and just the thing I needed at this time in my life. Katy Regnery has a gift with words and putting sentences together to enable you to picture what she is saying, and Alaska sounds beautiful. Little bits of drama but not too detailed and as it’s the first for the Stewart family you get to meet the characters for the books that will follow. I would recommend this book. [Simone, NSW]
The Secret Passion of Simon Blackwell by Samantha James (McBride Family #1) (historical romance)
I pulled this book off the TBR, where it had been languishing since 2007! Quite an emotional historical read. The hero has a tragic past, one the heroine doesn’t discover for quite some time, and then by accident. Second chance for happiness for him, but getting there takes a fair bit of angst. Someone wrote a recent review, hence me diving into the vault to pluck it out. Worth the wait. [Malvina, NSW]
Waking Up Married to the Billionaire by Michelle Douglas (contemporary romance)
What a beautiful story this one is. Michelle Douglas has taken me on a magical journey to Switzerland at Christmas time with a castle and introduced me to Ruby and Luis. I smiled, I cheered them on and I was swept away in the joy of love. I do highly recommend this one, it has left me sighing with delight, and there were so many happy tears. Thank you Michelle Douglas for another keeper. My trip to Switzerland will stay with me for a long time. Nothing better than a beautiful Christmas story, with awesome characters. [Helen, NSW]
I’m Your Guy by Sarina Bowen (Hockey Guys #2) (contemporary mm romance)
Tommaso is a hockey player with a new home that is literally empty. Carter is an interior designer who is broke and has just been evicted. This could be a match made in heaven. I enjoyed this story very much. Carter was adorable and Tommaso was very hot. The support of the team was heartwarming. Wouldn’t it be great if we lived in the world Sarina Bowen writes about?
