A Rankin short
The Rise by Ian Rankin was a bargain at £1.65.
As stories go a rich clientele in a London apartment block with 16 apartments has a lot of scope for something to happen without using to many characters to impede the flow of the story.
A very interesting characterisation of how flats and people in London could be. A lot going on in a two and a half hour period with empty flats where anybody could go, realistic justifications why the flats are empty, really good descriptions, fully rounded characters in a small wordcount, it’s amazing what you can say in just a few lines.
When a security guard is found dead at the start, why did this happen and will the environmentally conscious police investigator with a mum at home to care for find the solution, we will see?
With gangsters, Russians with money, princesses and actresses along with a small cast of detectives I think you will really enjoy this book.
A likely shoe in for Dagger nominations for short story.
