Welcome to our favourite reads for December. Each month some of ARRA’s members will tell you a little bit about one of the books they’ve recently read and loved.
These are not full reviews of the books, just honest opinions on why they enjoyed the book so much. Hopefully one of these will strike a chord with you.
So, we asked our members to tell us about some of their favourite reads for December …
The Grumpy Billionaire by Annika Martin (Billionaires of Manhattan #8) (romantic comedy)
I really enjoyed this romantic comedy, complete with cheeseballs, elevator sex and pineapple (not at the same time, thankfully)! It has a great heroine and hero who are clearly made for each other, in the ultimate ‘opposites attract’ way. As usual, the banter is delightful, and we get quite a few cameos from the characters in previous books. My only complaint is that the author has done such a good job of setting up the next book in the series, that I am already impatient for it to come out. [Deb, NSW]
Buffalo Dust by Mel A Rowe (Elsie Creek #9) (rural romance)
I love visiting Elsie Creek; it is such an awesome small town, the characters are wonderful and this is a story that I do highly recommend. Mel A Rowe never fails to bring her characters and this town to life is such a way so as the reader will feel a part of the story. Don’t miss this one. I smiled, I laughed and I cheered Luke and Jordi on, they are beautiful people. This one is filled with emotion and there were happy tears, and getting to learn how Cecil became part of the town was so good, because I do love him and I can’t wait for my next visit to Elsie Creek. [Helen, NSW]
The Book Club Hotel by Sarah Morgan (contemporary romance)
I truly enjoyed this book. Some of her Christmas books are more romantic than others; this had lovely romantic elements. It developed the relationships between three friends and a hotel owner, very real and in-depth; people were wonderfully honest, loving and kind with each other. It was also blissfully Christmassy and ticked everything for my Christmas vibe. If it made me crave hot chocolate, sparkly lights and a cosy library to have book club, zero judgement here. [Malvina, NSW]
Brooklyn Hockey series by Sarina Bowen (sports romance)
I went on a big re-reading binge over Christmas and have re-read all of Sarina Bowen’s Brooklyn Hockey series. I love these books, with their strong, imperfect-but-relatable heroes and spunky assertive heroines, and I enjoy watching them negotiate their differences, learn to deal with their traumas and choose love. I also like the world of these books, even though I’ve never even seen an ice-hockey match. But the friendship and camaraderie between the various characters is as heartwarming as the romances, without being in any way sloppy. [Anne, Vic]
The Marriage Effect by Karla Sorenson (Washington Wolves #3) (sports romance)
Logan has played with the Wolves for a long time, but has kept the fact he is guardian of his four younger sisters a well hidden fact, until one of them gets into trouble and ends up in hospital, giving his brother an excuse to try and get custody. Paige has inherited some money from an aunt, but to receive it she needs to be married. The events from their fake ‘ahem’ marriage to full-on love is full-on crazy (how could it not with four young girls!). The young girls and their real love for their brother was heartwarming! Lots of hilarious moments in this story. Loved it! [Linda, WA]
The Summer of Broken Rules by KL Walther (contemporary romance)
This is a NA summer vacation romance and it was just lovely. Meredith Fox and Stephen “Witty” Witrey are both college students who meet for the first time at her cousin’s wedding on the family farm on Martha’s Vineyard. Both the farm and the family is completely awesome and their week-long game of assassin was hilarious. Claire is mourning the loss of her sister 18 months ago, and Witty helps her to heal. There’s much more to this story, but I won’t spoil any of it. [Debbie, ACT]
