Swimmin’ with Circe and More!
Welcome back everyone. Thank you for stopping by to check out the latest TF . You can also find me here: @comic_book_true_firsts
I wrote about Circe when she was rumored to be the Wonder Woman 2 villain and when she was announced for Eternals. James Gunn’s tweet gets her one more go around by me.

Venus 1 and Venus 1 Red Circle Variant
First appearance of Circe
Yes this is a Marvel book but the Godless Circe first appeared here. Issues were later released with stapled covers for Red Circle Comics?! I guess they are pretty rare.
Wonder Woman 37
First appearance of Circe in DC
The first appearance of Circe has long been a coveted book among collectors. No matter what iteration Gunn uses, this is her first. The longer I watch comic movies the more I realize that investing in books that are connected to these movies or shows have little to do with the original comic story. Speculating on the comic narrative just isn’t not wise. Thankfully Gunn often uses the best elements from the comics even down to obscure stuff like Peacemaker’s helmet talking to him but characters are often a composite of what would work best on film.
Showcase Presents 21
First appearance Silver Age Circe ( Redesigned ) First cover
If I were a betting man this is one I would be looking for now. Circe was redesigned for this issue, getting dark hair for the first time. It is also her first cover and the look I could see working best for Anya.
Sea Devils 3
Robert Kanigher came back to write another Circe story long after WW 37 and what do you know, he used the redesign from Showcase 21. This is a rare early appearance and a dope cover.
Wonder Woman 302
First Copper Age Circe ( Cameo )
Circe made sporadic appearances after her initial introduction in the golden age. Her return in these issues of Wonder Woman reduced her to the minion of an Aztec god but she was respected enough to get cameos in Crisis on Infinite Earth a few years after this!
DC calls issue 305 the first historical appearance of Circe but she does have a cool cameo in this one.
NOTE: Circe appears as a statue in issue 305 and make a first Copper Age full in 312. DC also clearly stated in more than one source that these issues are Circe’s historical first whatever that is. Why is this important to note? I am not quite sure.
Who’s Who in the Definitive DC Universe 5 ( Canadian Price variant )
First cover together and meeting ( not in story ) of The Creature Commandos and Circe
Considering how many copies of this were printed I can only really recommend the Canadian and newsstand versions of this book. I honestly found this oddity by accident and I now find it fascinating that she was basically inserted into the image with the Commandos! It is quite a coincidence and the definition of a dollar bin gem.
Crisis on Infinite Earth’s ( cover )
First Perez Circe
This is her first by the legend.
Wonder Woman 17-19, 19 2nd printing
First post Crisis Cerce
So to clear things up Wonder Woman 17 has Circe in multiple panels showing her hands, lips and eyes. She also speaks. Here is what DC has said repeatedly but these days we crap all over authorship.
Her first post-crisis cover is issue 19 and we get an updated origin which, over time, did not stick and since has been messed with so much that even I don’t care! I would not be buying into this book. Gunn has given no information as to how he will use her. All we really know is that she in a part of the Creature Commandos as a character voiced by the smoke show Anya Chalotra. It is worth noting that there appears to be plans for her beyond the animated project.
Look, these Perez comics are dope. The whole run by him is but to randomly buy into this book is foolish. There are far better options.
If I were buying 19 these are the ones I would be looking for; the reprint, the Canadian Price Variant and the foreign.
Other notable books; War of the Gods 4 ( cover ), Men of War 2 ( redesign again! ), Superman’s GF Lois Lane 13, Justice League of America 102, Adv. Comics 390, Action Comics 243, Weird War Tales 65, Wonder Woman 89 ( cover ), Countdown 12 ( origin )
NOTE : Issue 19 is also the first Post-Crisis Hecate
Sensation Comics 46
First DC appearance of Hecate
It’s a good bet that Circe will end up connected to Hecate.
Wonder Woman 5, 1:25
First modern Hecate
—–OTHER STUFF—–
This section is reserved for all the other stuff I am looking for this week. True Firsts may or may not appear.
Protoculture Addicts 91
I see the Makoto Uno cover variant for Witchblade Manga 1 is selling. A variation of this appeared on this rare edition of PA.
Mad Dog 4
Can’t beat this cover
