Welcome back to another installment of Gutters: Comic gab for life in between the panels.
The new year has brought with it a slew of new comic titles, which can make it difficult to choose what to pick up the next time you visit your local comic shop. So, I thought I’d highlight a few new series that I’d recomend giving a shot.
Ultimate Spider-Man #1 – Marvel Comics
Let’s get the big one out of the way, a comic that’s currently the hottest title on the racks — Ultimate Spider-Man #1. This book is one of the first to release that takes place in Marvels new Ultimate universe, and is written by Johnathan Hickman, with fantastic art by Marco Checchetto. The consensus on this new iteration, where Peter is 35, married with children and has no spider powers, is that it’s a refreshing story with a lot of promise. Only time will tell how it turns out, but I’d recomend picking up the second print of issue #1 (as first prints are currently selling for $60) alongside issue #2 when they release on February 21st.
TMNT The Last Ronin 2: Re-Evolution #1 – IDW Publishing
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Last Ronin 2: Re-Evolution by Tom Waltz and co-creator Kevin Eastman, is the sequel story to the immensely popular Last Ronin series from a few years ago. That first arc was a great read, and Re-Evolution has potential to be another awesome addition to the turtle lore. Pick up the trade paperback of the first series, and get ready to be introduced to a new set of Ninja Turtles when you start The Last Ronin 2, due in shops March 6th.
Ghost Machine #1 – Image Comics
The new imprint from Image comics is a collective of some of the best creators in the industry, which has helped garner a lot of hype for Ghost Machine #1. Jason Fabok, Geoff Johns and Francis Manapul are just a few of the names attached to this new offering, which promises to bring with it a plethora of bold new stories and art. This one shot will consist of some familiars we’ve already met in the Geiger mythos, as well as new characters, and has just recently hit comic shelves, so keep an eye out for this title next new comic book day.
Star Wars: Thrawn Alliances #1 – Marvel Comics
Next on this list is a comic that features one of the deadliest generals in the galaxy — Star Wars: Thrawn Alliances #1. Whether it was in the Clone Wars or Rebels animated series, last year’s Ahsoka live action show, or the amazing novels this new comic is based off of, Thrawn has exceeded our expectations of what the next big bad of the Empire could be. If you’re excited for Ahsoka season 2, or the new Dave Filoni Star Wars film, then this would be a perfect time to learn more about a character that has recently gained so much recognition (and popularity) as Issue #1, by Jody Houser and Rod Reis, is in shops now.
John Constantine Hellblazer: Dead In America #1 – DC Black Label
Dead In America #1 stars an antihero with range; a character that feels right at home in the Sandman Universe, but also fits neatly into an epic Justice League story. But would a return to roots in another solo story from Si Spurrier and Aaron Campbell be a fun read? That’s like asking if Constatine has a smoking problem? That is to say, yes of course it has the potential to be (a fun read) but the only way to find out for sure will be to pick up this new DC Black Label mini-series, which was released a few weeks ago.
*BONUS BOOK*
The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #1 – DC Comics
This last one is a nostalgic pick for any fans of bat, teen and dog detectives, and was released earlier this month. I had fun with the previous iteration of this series and feel this would be great to read with the kiddos in your family.
Thanks so much for reading! Let me know (in the comments below) what new comics you’re excited about. I hope this new year is treating you well so far. I’ll be back next month with a new topic, but until then check out this new vlog from TMO.
