Every week we look at the new comics coming out and figure out what’s selling, what has potential, and what’s worth reading. Lets dive in!!
Already Selling
These are books that already have multiple sales well-over the cover price or base price
Captain Marvel #5 1:25 Dauterman Costume Variant
Dauterman’s costume variants have been consistently popular and sell well. With a book thats unlikely to have a lot of shops ordering 25 copies, this particular variant could be amongst the rarest.
Edge of Spider-Verse #1 Polybagged One Per Store Secret Variant
The only reason I can think of not to sell this book now is if you are a really huge believer in this Weapon-X and Spidey mashup . Stranger things have become big hits, but not many
Elvira Meets HP. Lovecraft #1 Adam Hughes Variant
This exclusive variant is consistently selling at 2x the buy-in. The ship has probably already sailed on buying this affordably, but you never know.
Amazing Spider-Man #253 Facsimilie Edition 1:25 Mobilli Variant
Ratio variants for facsimilie editions of books is one of the more ridiculous things I have seen from comics in a while. What cannot be denied, however, are the many sales of this book well over ratio.
Predator Last Hunt #1 Parrilo 1:25 Variant
As of this writing, this book has several sales well over ratio and very few listings available. That could change, but right now this is easy money
Super-Man #11 Villalobos 1:25 Variant
This one will almost certainly need to be a quick flip. While there are a decent number of sales over ratio, the margin is tight and inconsistent. Tough to trust that pattern to lead to sustained growth.
Spawn #350 1 Per Store Signed McFarlane Variant
I would be pretty surprised if this wasn’t #1 on the hot 10. There are over 30 sales on ebay over $300. If your shop somehow has not sold this yet, do your best to buy it!
Has Potential
These are books that are not selling out the gate, but I think could slowly rise in value
Batman #144
From what I have heard, this Joker: Year One storyline has actually been really good. “Year One” is obviously a really loaded phrase in Batman lore, but its not hard to see how a great story about the Joker’s origins could lead to a book gaining value. Not a book to buy 10 copies of (I don’t think), but may be worth taking a flier on one or two.
Ultimate Spider-Man #2
This book already has a lot of sales, but the margins are super inconsistent. Furthermore, I have a sense that at least part of those sales are coming from FOMO over issue #1, which is not usually how long term value is grown. That being said, every one of these new ultimate books has been a great seller so far, due in part to story quality. If that can sustain, perhaps so to can the value
Piquing My Interest
These are the books I find interesting as a reader or collector.
Blasphemous #1 & #2
Dstlry has yes to disappoint me, so I am going to keep buying everything they put out until they give me a reason to stop. Thinking I will get this Artgerm variant, but honestly fine with whatever cover I get.
Calexit Battle Of Universal City #1
I am iffy on this, but the premise is really interesting. May be a game-time decision
Captain Marvel #5
I loved Kelly Thompson’s run on the book, so I have been giving this new volume a shot. Never really liked Alyssa Wong’s writing before though and, unless this one really wows me, I think its coming off the pull list. Hope I can find Dauterman’s variant at my LCS, but not holding my breath
Cobra Commander #2
First issue was so damn weird, I have to know what’s next. Plus, the Energon Universe has been awesome so far
G.O.D.S. #5
This series has been…okay so far. I love Hickman’s work usually, so I am willing to give this series a bit more time. Was really hoping to be hooked by now though.
Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1
This marks the conclusion of Kelly and Lanzing’s story in Guardians of the Galaxy . Been an above average Guardians run, really interested to see how they close it out
Holy Roller #4
This series has been entertaining throughout, but it’s taken way too long to reach this point in its narrative. That being said, now that we are here, I am really excited to see this Andy Samberg-written character beat the shit out of Nazis with bowling balls.
Incredible Hulk #9
Series has been pretty good so far. Johnson is clearly building to something and I am enjoying the monster of the week format.
Rise of the Powers of X #2
Kieron Gillen is an amazing storyteller and the first issue was a banger. Cannot wait to see what he comes up with next. This book is so much better than Fall of the House of X. Really wish Gillen was writing both books, just like how Hickman Wrote House of X and Powers of X.
Spider-Boy #4
Slott has created a really fun character here. I know I am probably not the target demographic for this series, but its whacky fun every issue and I look forward to it every month nonetheless. Also, Slott has a pretty solid track record of creating characters with sustained interest and/or value
Spider-Woman #4
So Steve Foxe has Jess’ sarcastic voice down pat. The problem is the narrative, specifically that they seem to be further undoing the great work Dennis Hopeless did with his run on the series. Starting a series with a tie-in is never easy, so I am going to give this series a few more issues before I totally write it off.
Star Wars #43
Every time I think I am going to drop this book, Soule writes an incredible issue that hooks me back in. Let see if he can keep it up.
Ultimate Spider-Man #2
I hope this book goes for hundreds of issues with this creative team. I am going to buy the main cover as well, but I just love Elizabeth Torque’s style and had to pull this cover as well
X-Force #49
Benjamin Percy has been building to this story for years now and I cannot wait to see how it all shakes out for Beast.
