Outside Looking In for 2/23/24
Welcome to a new column that will spotlight some comics that didn’t quite make the Hot 10 List. Think of this as the honorable mentions and some comics that may not qualify for the regular Hot 10 List.
You might be surprised that some of these didn’t make the main list, but that is not a disservice to any of these books, but a credit to those that made it. Some of the below just didn’t quite have the price increase or volume to warrant a spot yet.
If you haven’t noticed, I do not include any Exclusives on the Main List (Store, Convention, or otherwise). I just don’t feel its equal footing to include those books on the regular list, so I don’t use them there. But sometimes there are Exclusives worth noting, and this is where you may find them going forward, on the Outside Looking In.
Borderlands #1
A Trailer and poster reveal have reminded folks that this movie is still coming. As such the IDW series has seen some renewed interest of late.
Early sales have been strong but volumes are not there just yet. There are multiple printings of this including a Gamestop variant. I think this goes up to 4th print, and all seem to be selling. Prices have been between $25-50 so far, so we’ll see how this goes. Don’t forget there are 1:10 retailer incentives on this series as well.
Marvel Team-Up #65
Renewed rumors that Henry Cavill may be coming to the MCU and he may be offered the role of Captain Britain. I would personally love this idea, especially if they do Cap Britain and the MI13 which would be an awesome Disney + series.
But whatever hey do or do not do, for now rumors have folks buying this one back up as it is his 1st US appearance.
Prices have mostly been around $20-30 raw but there have been some high price outlier sales. As such this didn’t quite make the list, but if volumes pick up and those outliers become more the norm, I would not be surprised to see this make it next week.
DC vs Marvel #1
So the publishers decided to get back together and reprint this crossover series. Those reprints may hurt the original TPB’s that I mention to you all in my revamped Trade Secrets article, but it has opened the door for wild speculation that we will get a new crossover event.
Whether we get a new series or not, for now folks are going back and picking up this initial event. Prices are still only around $10-15. Folks like the newsstands too, but the one to watch is the DCU variant as one of hose sold this week for $50+ raw.
Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth #7
We’ve seen this one hovering around the outside for a while now. All 3 printings of this seem to be over $100 raw now. I am showing you the 3rd print which also had nearly a $700 CGC 9.8 sale. Last week saw a 2nd print hit $1k in 9.8, while the 1st print is closing in on $400 for a 9.8
Folks expect to see Lady Deadpool in the upcoming film. Maybe they will or maybe they won’t. One would think its only a quick cameo at best, so ask yourself how much that means to you with your wallet if you are looking to invest in this one.
Spawn #350 One Per
I had a tough time deciding what to do with this one as it is technically a presale as even though he regular issue #350 was released this week, this signed edition isn’t due in stores until 3/7.
That said this is a one per store for qualifying shops. To qualify shops had to order at least 25 copies of #350. That makes you want to call it a 1:25, but the rub is that shops will only get 1 copy as long as they meet that 25 minimum. That’s an important distinction.
However you look at it, prices on this one have been crazy as there have been dozens of presales from anywhere between $400-$600 so far.
Only a couple listed right now and they are also looking for $500-600. So we’ll see where this one lands at release in 2 weeks, but right now being a “presale” it doesn’t qualify for the main list.
This list will also be covered each week on my channel by my friends on their Friday Night show, The Qualified: We’re All a Little Damaged. The fellas cover the week’s news in comics and pop culture, and have many other fun comic segments and artist spotlights. Check them out every week on The Qualified at about 9:30pm est immediately following the CBSI Hot 10 Show.
