Wednesday One 4/3/24

Every week we look at the new comics coming out and figure out what’s selling, what has potential, and what’s worth reading.  Lets dive in!!
First Appearances

Deadpool  #1
1st appearance of a new villain called Death Grip.  Cody Ziglar has been crushing his other Marvel work and it feels like he will have a very natural sense of Deadpool’s voice.

Immortal Thor  #9
Cameo / 1st Appearance Chad Hammer, a.ka. Roxxon Thor
In the pages of Immortal Thor , Roxxon bought the in-universe Marvel Comics so they could control the story of Thor.  A big theme in modern Thor comics is the importance of stories and myths in a god’s power.  Roxxon wants to harness this for their ends by fundamentally changing Thor’s story so he will align with their interests.  Very meta, cannot wait to read it.

Already Selling

Birds of Prey  #8
Really only selling for cover price, but there have been WAY more sales than you would expect for a title like this.  Kelly Thompson is a phenomenal writer, going to start checking this book out.  The Jim Lee variant above is my favorite of the covers

Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin #1
Crazy amount of presales on this flashback series from J.M. Dematteis ( Kraven’s Last Hunt ) telling the origin story of the Proto-Goblin (first appearance  Spider-Man  #-1).  The 1:25 has been selling at around ratio.

Suicide Squad: Kill Arkham Asylum  #3
Way more presales than you normally see for a third issue of a non-Batman DC book.  The gorgeous Stephanie Hans variant above seemed to be a plurality of sales.

Cool Covers

Batman  #146 Jim Lee Artist Spotlight Variant
Batman always looks cool on horseback

Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees  #3 Lonergan 2nd Print
Reminds me of some of Superlog’s Marvel variants.  Anyway, this is just an awesome cover

Deadpool  #1 Inhyuk Lee Foil Variant
So I am not a fan of foil covers usually because all too often its really just a cash grab.  I have to give Marvel some credit though – they have done a good job of finding covers where foil will really add something.  This cover looks dope and you can totally imagine how the foil will add a shining effect to the blades and bullets that could heighten the deflection effect.
Deadpool  #1 Javier Garron Vampire Variant
Really love homages in this retro style with modern colors and a unique sensibility.  This feels like it could be a cover A, it matches Deadpool as a character perfectly.

Grim #16 Skylar Patridge Variant
This cover has such an awesome tarot-card aesthetic to it.
Sensational She-Hulk #7 Betsy Cola Vampire Variant
I love Betsy Cola’s style and the retro-horror aesthetic works so great here.

Great Reads

Avengers  #12
Fall of X  has basically just been one gigantic buildup to a massive fight between the X-Men and their allies and Orchis.  MacKay is a great writer and this is what everything has been building towards, so I am pumped to see some action

Batman  #146
A long time ago, Batman partitioned off a part of his brain for a version of his personality, Zur-En-Arrh who was willing to go to lengths Batman never would.  This run has had some hiccups ( Gotham War), but also a lot of praise (Failsafe), especially lately ( Joker Year One ).  Maybe it’s time I pick the series back up

Vengeance of the Moon Knight  #4
Up until now, readers have been given no indication as to who this new deadly Moon Knight truly is.  According to some spoilers I have seen, that will change with this issue.  This book is basically a continuation of Jed MacKay’s  Moon Knight  run, which was absolutely incredible.
This is also an awesome cover.  All of the A covers for this series have been excellent.

Sensational She-Hulk  #7
This book does a great job of honoring She-Hulk’s previous runs.  The current storyline features many of the whacky cosmic elements from John Byrne’s time on  Sensational She-Hulk  and continues to follow Jen’s relationship with Jack of Hearts.  The book is almost worth it just for the stunning Jen Bartel covers, but the actual story is a delight every time.

Doctor Strange  #14
This storyline started last issue and its basically Jed MacKay taking his favorite characters and having them do real-life Dungeons and Dragons.  Its already awesome and most of last issue was just setting up narrative stakes, so I am expecting awesome stuff from this issue.

Void Rivals  #8
Energon Universe has a 100% success rate for me right now.

Save For Later

Avengers: Twilight  #3 2nd Print
In Marvel’s version of Kingdom Come , Steve Rogers has to lead a resistance in a dystopic world secretly lead by the Red Skull, who has corrupted the son of James Stark.  This series is hot because people genuinely love the writing, art, and characters.

Rook: Exodus #1
First off, this cover is just badass.  Second, I am interested to see how these Ghost Machine books do.  If people really respond to the universe, these first few #1s could be worth something

Redcoat  #1
Same situation as Rook: Exodus  #1
