Cliff by nature

When listening to a book by Chris Brookmyre these days I struggle to know what style I’m going to get, whether it’s the early comedic days when he was under the name of Christopher Brookmyre when he wrote the books like The Unsinkable Rubber Ducks or the historical books of Ambrose Parry, or the quirky stand alones he now writes.

After one of my favourites The Cut I wondered what he was going to write next. The last thing I expected was a book about a hen weekend, which as often been done but very few with this many dark and twisted secrets, but I suppose that was what the plot was about really.

When 7 women end up at a posh house with piped in music through wi-fi, it’s own chef and everything idyllic you could probably come up with, friends that haven’t seen each other for a long time will have lots to reveal, but I bet when they started the weekend they had no idea what the cost of what they may reveal would lead to.

After a slow build up designed so you know something about each of the characters, each chapter is told from a different perspective. Something drastic happens and the isolation really kicks in, with the technology leading to tension, I can totally see why this book was nominated by the panel.

Will Chris manage to pick up another Theakston’s barrel, I think this one may give him a good chance of doing so?
