Seeing the Aurora Australis

There’s a solar-storm on at the moment, and since the South Island is having a day and night with clear skies, that means Aurorae. I have just got back from a midnight visit to Tunnel Beach – southwards-looking over the Sea, and without the light pollution. Quite a few others had a similar idea.

The Aurora Australis – the Southern Lights – were a milky glow over the Sea. Grey and ghostly, but notable for the vertical ‘inscriptions’ across the sky. Alas, I did not have a camera with me to pick up the colours – for me, this was just naked-eye viewing.

A friend of mine was however able to get this image a couple of hours ago, looking towards the South:

Very pretty.
