Netflix Reveals First Look & Release Date for ‘Terminator Zero’ Anime Series
Netflix has announced that Terminator Zero , the upcoming Terminator anime series, would launch globally on August 29, 2024. Along with the release date announcement, the streaming service has released a slew of first look photographs from the series, which will follow a classic Terminator plot as a soldier sent back in time to save humanity from Skynet.
If a release date and first look weren’t enough, you can now read the official Terminator Zero synopsis below.
“2022: A future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines.
1997: The AI known as Skynet gained self-awareness and began its war against humanity.
Caught between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who works to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future which forever alters the fate of his three children.”
The eight-episode series, created and executive produced by Mattson Tomlin ( The Batman Part II ) and produced by Skydance Animation by Production IG Studios, will be set in the Terminator universe but will feature new characters. Masashi Kudo (Bleach, Chain Chronicle: The Light of Haecceitas) will direct Terminator Zero, which will run for eight episodes. Netflix’s Terminator Zero anime series will provide a “never-before-told” story, according to John Derderian, the company’s vice president of Japan and anime.
“The Terminator is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created-and has only grown more relevant to our world over time. The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans.”
Series creator Mattson Tomlin says he is “honored” to be contributing to the Terminator franchise and can’t wait to “subvert expectations.”
“Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart. I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.”
The Terminator , originally created by James Cameron, began with the first film in 1984 and has since become one of the most famous sci-fi action series of all time, with 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day generally regarded as one of the greatest sequels ever produced. Along with the anime series, Terminator is slated to return to the big screen in live action, with Cameron rumored to be working on a new installment that will represent current challenges around artificial intelligence (AI).
Should fans of the franchise be concerned about a new series with another female lead that is expected to “subvert expectations,” or should we expect good things?
