Shōgun Coming Back for Two More Seasons, but How Will That Work?
In an update to our reporting a few days ago, it’s not just one, but two more seasons of the historical drama Shōgun that fans can now look forward to. FX and Hulu are allegedly planning two additional seasons of the historical drama, following the popularity of the first season. According to THR , Shōgun , originally meant as a limited series, will continue as the estate of author James Clavell reunites with FX/Hulu for future seasons.
“The company noted that both seasons are in development, meaning that a two-season renewal depends on how the creative comes in,” according to the Hollywood Reporter, and a writers room is now being established, and those participating must figure out how to continue the plot beyond James Clavell’s 1975 novel.
New seasons of Shōgun will reassemble the original team, including co-creators, executive producers, and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, executive producer Michaela Clavell, and of course the star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada, who led the previous series as Lord Yoshii Toranaga.
Shōgun features an ensemble cast of Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, Tommy Bastow, and Fumi Nikaido. The series is based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel and is set in Japan in the year 1600. The plot revolves around Lord Yoshii Toranaga as he struggles for his survival against enemies on the Council of Regents. Meanwhile, a mystery European ship is discovered stranded in a local fishing community. The series was critically acclaimed and well received by audiences, with a 99% critics score and 90% audience score via Rotten Tomatoes . However, some fans are skeptical that follow-ups that don’t have the benefit of James Clavell’s writings to adapt, will live up to the first season.
GoT vibes now. Writers gonna have to freestyle the rest of the story, and we all know how that goes. Second you take these guys off of the source material, it usually goes to the gutter.
Really hoping that doesn’t happen here with Shogun, but Im not holding my breath.

While I love Shogun, is this a good idea? They ran out of source material since there only is one book https://t.co/yLdYIAteMw pic.twitter.com/pI0joVPXFP

Think they should leave it, limited series hold a lot of power. BUT I also want more and historical fiction is and easy source to mine. Have no doubt Hiroyuki will keep on them as producer to make sure it’s good and authentic too. https://t.co/xUjMDHz8uG
