Amazing Comic Book Covers & Pages
The first Amazing Comic Book Covers & Pages of 2024 is here. You'll find some moments of heartbreak, bad-assery, and deliciousness. Well, this edition is more about the pages than the covers. Let's start with something that will whet your appetite. Anthony Bourdain & Joel Rose story/creators | Langdon Foss artist/creator Jose Villaburia & Dave Stewart colours | Todd Klein lettters Vertigo Comics, 2012 Leave it to the late, great, celebratory chef Anthony Bourdain (June 1956 to June 2018) to co-create a comic book about a dystopian future where chefs rule (check out his comicography here ). At the 2012 San Diego Comic Con, Bourdain explains why his comic book creation had to be a sushi chef. Yours truly lived in Japan for 15 years and enjoyed sushi many times while there. However, I have only had it once since returning to Canada. Once you've had sushi in a sushi-ya (すしや), you won't want it anywhere else. Bourdain is unquestionably the draw to Get Jiro , but Langdon Foss and Jose Villaburia are the ones who pull the reader into Jiro's world. They recreate sushi with the craftsmanship and love of a chef. Take a look at their rendition of uni wrapped in seaweed. Bourdain had travelled extensively, enjoying the cuisine of dozens of countries, but Japan had a special place in his heart. Yours truly lived in Japan for 15 years and enjoyed sushi many times while there. However, I have only had it once since returning to Canada. Once you've had sushi in a sushi-ya ( すしや ), nothing else is going to cut it. So, I can fully appreciate Jiro's (and Bourdain's) wrath after witnessing a bluetooth douchebag disrespecting Japan's culinary culture. Never EVER do this
