We’re well into festival season now but June is a particularly important month for crime fiction readers – this is National Crime Reading Month, a partnership between the Crime Writers’ Association and The Reading Agency to promote the genre. You can check out events at crimereading.com
As podcast partners of the CWA Daggers we have three special shows coming in July, including chats with Diamond Dagger winners Lynda la Plante and James Lee Burke. Before that we thought we’d delve into some of the events promoting crime reading this month. There’ll be an exclusive show featuring excerpts of panels and book chats from across the country, featuring the broad sweep of the genre. So please look out for that.
Paul also spoke to Simon Toyne, festival host, and Jane Casey, guest panellist, for a preview show on the 5th SLAUGHTERFEST in London on 11th June, that episode is already posted. Victoria Selman recently appeared at Capital Crime for a panel with Vanessa Walters, Chris Whittaker and Erin Kelly on The Ties That Bind, hear that here in a couple of weeks. Barry Forshaw also moderated Murder By The Book in Cambridge on 4th June featuring Fiona Veitch Smith, Nadine Matheson and Abir Mukherjee discussing influences on their writing.
The latest #OnTheSofa with Victoria features her conversation with Cara Hunter moderated by Triona Matthews at the Oxford Literary Festival, talking about their latest books, serial killers and our fascination with true crime. In other episodes Robert Gold & Robert Rutherford discuss thrillers and Claire Douglas & Claire McGowan chat closed circle and other puzzles in crime fiction.
In Person With Paul features interviews with top spy writer Joseph Kanon and fabulous literary historical author Ben Pastor. Recent shows featuring Viper’s Dan Malikin, William Shaw on Alexandra Cupidi and Dugald Bruce-Lockhart on famous family and his new thriller Second Skin.
There will be a little less of Paul in the coming three months as the Crime Time FM roadshow and dedicated shows on the CWA Daggers and other events take precedence. Our innovative coverage of events is something we’re very proud of here.
Guest presenter Sarah Moorhead will be interviewing Trevor Wood about his new novel The Silent Killer about a cop with early onset dementia in July and Craig Sisterson will be bringing his own inimitable style to us for a couple of shows in August.
Please check out the May Review Show featuring new reads by John Connolly, Kellye Garrett, Emiko Jean, Olivier Norek, Dark Deeds Down Under Vol. 2 stories edited by Craig Sisterson, Fiona McPhillips, Aslak Nore and an adword from Jennifer Lee Thompson. June will include MW Craven’s The Mercy Chair, Robert J Lloyd’s The Bedlam Cadaver, Antoine Lourain’s French Windows, Stuart McBride’s In Dark Places, DV Bishop’s A Divine Duty and a comments on the latest tranche of titles from Penguin Modern Classics Crime and Espionage fiction.
