Smart Murder

Victoria Dowd’s third Smart book plays upon a number of the crime writing industry’s most popular cliches. One of these being the different ways that she has dealt with the isolated location issue. This time even involving a moat and drawbridge. If you can’t get the drawbridge to go down, how do you get out, or even in? Combine this with the weather, too, and you hit most of the tick boxes.



What I enjoyed so much about this was the indirect references to Cluedo. Now that it is the third book of this series that I’ve read, it is really interesting to spot who are the incidental characters, who’s going to be murdered and who will be the killer. But by now, I’m going to expect more than one, so I like to wait for the clues to be laid out before I can solve it, because Victoria can just turn round and murder a suspect. This is what makes it such an intriguing read, coupled in this book, with such unusual methods of murder.



I’m really glad that I’m reading her books for Newark.
