Outside Looking In for Jun 7th, 2024

Welcome to a new column that will spotlight some comics that didn’t quite make the Hot 10 List. Think of this as the honorable mentions and some comics that may not qualify for the regular Hot 10 List.
You might be surprised that some of these didn’t make the main list, but that is not a disservice to any of these books, but a credit to those that made it. Some of the below just didn’t quite have the price increase or volume to warrant a spot yet.
If you haven’t noticed, I do not include any Exclusives on the Main List (Store, Convention, or otherwise). I just don’t feel its equal footing to include those books on the regular list, so I don’t use them there. But sometimes there are Exclusives worth noting, and this is where you may find them going forward, on the Outside Looking In.

Wolverine #36

Almost worming its way back on the list after months off, we have our new Hellverine series in play, renewing interest in this old 1st appearance.
Don’t want to spoil this any more than I already have with our main list entry, but we’ll see if this interest remains once folks read it.
That said, this is back to $75 raw while CGC 9.8’s are just under $200.

Masters of the Universe #1

I thought the 1st appearance in DC Comics Presents would be the book people went for, but maybe it’s outpriced too many collectors. So it looks like they have settled in on the 1st issue of the 1982 mini instead as a cheaper alternative.
Averaging about $20 on 20+ sales, this also almost made the main list getting bumped off at the last minute. But a random raw hit a high of $68 this week while a CGC 9.8 can get $300. So we’ll keep an eye on this one.

Venom vs. Carnage #1

This used to be a $50 book. Those days seem long gone as this is back down to $15-30 this week with sets of the complete mini netting $70.
With he new movie on the way I think a confirmation or appearance on Toxin in a new trailer will do wonders for returning this book to its prior highs. But for now, this is what we got.

Free Comic Book Day 2017: Monster High #1

A new movie announced has folks looking for an old FCBD book. Averaging $10-15 on only about 10 sales so fat this week, this one will be interesting to watch.
Given our community is predominantly male, and skewing older by the day; is there room for a new kid-centric product like this with collectors. especially one that doesn’t have a regular ongoing type title?
This will be interesting to watch over the next year or so as we hit the various stages of production.

Venom: The Hunted #2

As noted on the main list, the Xenophage isn’t fully revealed until this issue. Issue #1 was more of a horror movie tease where you don’t get a good look until later in the film, sowing only the weapon or an arm as it’s most told thru reaction shots of the victim.
That said, I would be surprised if more folks start point at this issue in the weeks ahead once they start opening up the books and seeing what’s inside. This book is only about $5-10 right now, butt he best play is prob grabbing the whole 3 issue mini if you can find it cheap enough. Hey Topher even mentioned this years ago in True Firsts .
That all said, what future upside do we foresee for this creature that isn’t even an actual “character”, when we are looking at an appearance in the last film in a mediocre franchise?
