Variant Heat Check for Jun 8th, 2024

Welcome to a new edition of Variant Heat Check. There’s been something missing from these since I brought it back and I finally realized what it was. The actual Heat Check Ranking. So I’ve instituted a 5 star type system based on the most recent sale so you have some context on how the book is currently performing.
I figured its time to bring this back working with my buddies over at SNS to bring you a spotlight on about four variants each week.
This week, I have a 1:10, a 1:100, and a retailer exclusive. Plus we have one definite Cold variant that was once very hot but has fallen on hard times.
As I always say, Comics should be fun; and I want to provide content that keeps this hobby the good time that it should be.  So, without further ado, let’s see what some Variants are doing on today’s market…

First Up:

Classic Popeye #30 1:10
CGC 9.4 Sold for $475.00

I just looked at a bunch of these on my most recent Chasing Ghosts because of a $420 raw sale a couple weeks ago. And now we follow hat up with this CGC 9.4 sale for $475. This is the only sale in this grade, and as you can see, this doesn’t come up for sale very often. In fact, if you were shopping for one right now, you’ve got no options.
Steve Mannion has become more popular of the last year or so with collectors and this book is a good example why. Great details with his stylized art. This is definitely one of my favorites of the Popeye 1:10’s.

Next:

Image United #1 1:100 Sketch
CGC 9.8 Sold $675.00 on 6/2/24

Wow, remember Image United? All the OG Image creators drawing their own creations in a huge crossover event. Very ambitious and plagued with delays, is was anyone surprised they never finished it? I’m surprised they even got 3 of the 6 issues done.
That said, issue #1 had a 1:100 Jim Lee sketch cover. The color version does pretty well, but this is on of the more sought after editions of this book. An accepted best offer of $675 was accepted this week which is an all time high for this book in that grade. More surprising than the existence of 7 CGC 9.9’s for this comic, is also the fact that there is a CGC 10.0
One can only wonder what those might fetch on today’s market.

Last One:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin #1 Bartling
Raw sold for $599.99 on 6/6/24

Yes there were a ton of exclusives for this book. I mean seriously dozens. But this one appears to be one of the more limited editions as it was consigned by a gaming store and had only 300 copies, before they went back and made more foil editions. The non foil version is more sought after and can fetch big numbers considering it originally cost only $25 and came with a collectible coin.
This week one sold for $600 which is only outpaced by a copy that sold for $625 last month. Before that this was only doing about $400 raw in the spring and only $250 before that. That $625 I missed is the only thing keeping this from being on Fire.

And now:
Our Ice Cold Variant of the week…

Captain Marvel 2nd Print
CGC 9.8 Sold $775.00 on 6/5/24

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Granted this is not the recent floor as this has hit as low as $550 in CGC 9.8 this year, but even at $775 his is way down from the heights of 2021. Seriously this was at one time a $7,700 comic. Consider that. This book lost 90% of its value in 3 years.
While we can all admit that the pandemic cause some irrational prices on many comics, this was just another example of spec getting out of control. I was never a big fan of this book. My feelings that a 2nd print is not a 1st appearance are well documented. While I get that this was a unique case because of the cover, but again I thought it was reckless spending even at $2k, where it lingered for years before the insane spike and it’s eventual descent.
Where its at now feels about right to me and I could see possible minor spikes in the future, but I doubt it will ever reach its prior heights. And I’m not even talking about the insane $7k.

This list will also be covered each week on my channel by my friends, the SNS boys. The fellas cover the week’s news in comics and pop culture, and have many other fun comic  segments. Check them out if you like talking comics with a lighter attitude. The language can get a little salty, so it’s not intended for the kiddos; but you can check the boys out every week at 9pm est on Saturday Night Special .
