Wood,Laura N. Louis Pasteur Hardcover (Published in 1948 by Julian Messner, a division of Pocket Books Inc., 8 W. 40 th St., New York City, NY 10018). Louis Pasteur (1822–1895) was a French chemist and microbiologist renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation, and pasteurization, the last of which was named after him. His research in chemistry led to remarkable breakthroughs in the understanding of the causes and preventions of diseases, which laid down the foundations of hygiene, public health and much of modern medicine. Pasteur’s works are credited with saving millions of lives through the developments of vaccines for rabies and anthrax. He is regarded as one of the founders of modern bacteriology and has been honored as the “father of bacteriology” and the “father of microbiology.” He was the director of the Pasteur Institute, established in 1887, until his death,
This is the kind of biography that I relished reading when I was growing up. It is a little more technically detailed than others which I have seen, so it probably would not hold the interest of younger children very well. The book has an index in the back, so it would make an excellent resource for school reports. We who are alive in the 21 st century have so many blessings and benefits that it is easy to forget the ones who paved the way for us. Things like rabies and anthrax are almost unheard of today. We need to remember and be thankful for men like Pasteur who found both the causes and the cures for these formerly dreaded, dangerous, and deadly diseases. Good biographies suitable for children and teens can be very helpful in making young people aware of great individuals of the past who deserve our gratitude and praise. One thing that is made clear throughout the book is that Pasteur was a scientist who was characterized by a sincere religious faith.
