Returning to the Chair

The Dying Day is Vaseem Khan’s second Persis Wadia novel. In this series he appears to have expertly created his own versions of other big writer’s story arcs. In the first, Midnight at Malabar House, the similarities to Mick Herron’s Slough House series were subtly evident and in this, any fan of big sellers would see Dan Brown as an obvious refence point, with the divine comedy by Dante at its core, with lots of puzzles there for the reader to solve, much like Langdon’s approach in Dan Brown’s series.

But the distinctive angle of Vaseem’s books and the fact that they are set in 1950’s India and the cultural background to that, in the first he had the background of Partition and in this, set only two weeks after the previous had done, it has a backstory of something that UK audiences would be more used to. I shan’t say what that is, but boulders and fedoras might give you a hint.

A really excellent book and I’m really looking forward to reading the next in the series in the near future.
