Long List Part 4

Victoria Selman’s Truly Darkly Deeply, will be put alongside some earlier books I’d read this year that are also on the long list to end this series of posts until next week, as my assistant is only available to do it on 4 days out of 8. And also today has marked my own book finally becoming available for pre-order after two years of working on the project, so this is why it is being written at 21.15, instead of earlier during the day.



At 8.5 hours, Truly Darkly Deeply is the shortest in audio duration on the long list, but given the style of the book, you can see why.



As a book that revolves around the reflections of someone close to a serial killer, it has less mysteries than other parts of the genre and is all about the emotional tension within the plot. Because of this there is no need to set up, or create, red herrings or any kind of mystery. Although there were twists at the end, the book is generally a narrative about the impact of a serial killer upon the protagonist, Sophie, as the early 1980s is gone through from the point of view of a young child.



Young children are used less as protagonists in crime fiction, but as the quote at the of the book refers to fans of Girl A will also like this, as that has a similar character narrative.



This entry shows the breadth of this year’s list and I shall be curious how many people in the public vote for this one as it is so uniquely different from the rest. Good luck to Victoria with this entry.
