The long list – Part 10

Today I’ve finished the final book in this year’s Theakston’s long list, Lucy Foley’s The Paris Apartment.

Now having read a couple of Lucy’s books, I can say how confident I am in her multiple cast approach, heavily helped out by the 6 narrators in this audiobook, which gave the process more authenticity and great French accents to draw you in.

The way that the book opens with a great tension point, with Ben wondering who is at his door whilst he messages his sister, who takes a key role in this book and the way that the perspectives switch allows the reader to know things at the right time. I didn’t manage to guess all of the twists, but at least I got one of them. This is the sign of a good writer, as there were enough clues in there for me to pick out something.

I’m really not sure which of the books will make the short list, but with the complexity of this plot, the number of characters and the dark twist it takes, I hope it makes the short list along with several other excellent books, too.

As always, I’ve really enjoyed reading the long list and can’t wait to see everyone in Harrogate in July.
