This Cleaving and This Burning

Listed in the Literature category on Art In Fiction, This Cleaving and This Burning (2020) is the second volume in J. A. Wainwright’s Guernica Prize series. Two unrelated, aspiring writers, born on the same day in the same year to parents with the same first names, grow up together and eventually gain national prominence as authors. As the years pass, the complex sexual identities of Miller Sark and Hal Pierce undermine their intense private relationship, inflicting damage that cannot be undone by the distinction of their fiction and poetry. "Insightful moments and emotional scenes involving each hit their mark, and the reader feels drawn to the passions of both for life and literature." ― Ottawa Review of Books J.A. Wainwright was born in Toronto in 1946. His first novel, A Deathful Ridge (about George Mallory and the 1924 Mount Everest expedition), was shortlisted for the Boardman-Tasker Prize in Mountain Literature in 1997. He has been influenced over the years by the writing of Patrick White, Lawrence Durrell, and Bob Dylan, and taught a course on Dylan's lyrics and music at Dalhousie University where he is now an emeritus professor of English Literature.
