Spy Superb

A spy that doesn't know he's a spy, but fantasizes he's a spy is the "spy superb".  Matt Kindt and Sharlene Kindt have deftly turned the spy thriller on its head and inside-out with Spy Superb .  There's no genre Matt Kindt can't reinvent, brilliant deconstruct (destroy?), or make his own. This  isn't his first series in this genre.  Super Spy ,  Bang! ,  Black Badge and  Mind Mgmt  all deliver a unique adventure into spycraft.  Martin Simmonds   Spy Superb is Kindt's latest, off-kilter, comedic foray into the world of espionage and intrigue. The protagonist is someone we can all either identify with, have met, or known and all-of-the-above.  Who is the Spy Superb ? Or, rather who was he? Spy Superb is more dangerous than a legend; he's an idea that works. Everybody, meet our clueless hero. Jay. We all know, have known, or will eventually meet guys like Jay; some of us are Jay. Except, we're not being surreptitiously used by a cabalist agency to carry out dark ops (or are we?).  The perfect spy isn't sauve or intelligent, but socially oblivious; totally unaware of his own limitations and flaws. Jay becomes the latest Spy Superb and a target for a Russian hit squad, by dint of his own clumsiness and (bad) luck He also becomes a target of a very unfortunate. miraculously hapless Russian hit squad. I've been a fan of  Matt Kindt  since  Dept.H  series (Dark Horse, April 2016). One reason for my fandom, is his ability to build fully-realized characters very quickly, but in a way that doesn't feel rushed. Kindt doesn't use thought-balloons or captions that let us read the characters thoughts.  Lucky Leong is the of the assassins to reach Jay, but doesn't take the shot. We don't really need to get inside Lucky's head to know that why she chooses not to kill Jay. The expression on her face; the absurdity of both the situation and her target. As it is with all their work, the art of  Matt Kindt and Sharlene Kindt is one-of-a-kind. It's raw, natural: the paper looks damp from water-colours. You get a feeling the charcoal is going to smudge.  In each individual issue, there are added features. The inside-front and back covers have pin-ups, diagrams, maps, notes, etc.  I bought digital copies of  Mind Mgmt six years ago and read them. But, it didn't feel as though I had actually experienced them. Last year, I " caved ", and bought  Mind Mgmt Ominbus Part 1 . A Matt Kindt / Sharlene Kindt comic book held and experienced. Get Spy Superb into your hands. No need to keep secret.
