Preparing for Theakstons

With the Theakston’s itinerary having just arrived through my door this week, one of the first names to stick out for me was S.A. Cosby, after I read his debut book, Blacktop Wasteland after several people glowingly recommended it. I loved the book, so had to read his follow up Razorblade Tears in preparation for this years’ festival, where he will appear first thing Saturday morning, in conversation with Chris Hammer.



His dark look at the US and its underbelly of organised crime has been captured in his first two books. His characters, despite their criminal tendencies, are always fundamentally likeable and have in-depth real life reasons for what goes on in the novels. In Razorblade Tears, it is a revenge quest for two fathers after the death of their sons.



With the number of action scenes in this book, this would be perfect for film, particularly the way that it concludes. Alongside that is a discussion of a theme that is now becoming more prevalent, that of LGBTQ. The sensitive way in which this is dealt with allows for the complexities of the LGBTQ community to be expressed in fiction in an exciting and interesting way, which will highlight this to people not familiar with it.



This was a great book that I really enjoyed and I’m looking forward to hearing about his latest at Theakston’s.
