Edwards’ First

The Magpies has just reached its 10th anniversary. This was Mark’s first book that he wrote on his own, after his collaboration with Louise Voss. When I knew that I’d got an interview with him regarding his book collection and his opinions on how to create a psychological thriller, I knew that I had to start with this book, as I’d heard a lot about it and how it came to fruition.



Mark himself says that Magpies is a more extreme version of his own experiences, this, at times, was quite shocking in its content. Particularly all of the elements of how the crimes occurred at the end of the book. I won’t say too much about this,, but it was disturbing to say the least.



Now that I’ve read five or six of Mark’s books, reading this book has showed me how he has developed as a writer, from his horror roots as a Stephen King fan and the psychological elements n this book, to hit more of the mainstream psychological element in his latest, which I really enjoyed. Although I’ll be reading one more book by him before I interview him on the 16th, I can see why this book gave Mark his reputation.
