Mark’s Remaining Adventure

Yesterday, as part of my book on psychological thrillers, I interviewed Mark Edwards about his opinions on these and also about his own books. Just before the interview I finished Follow you Home, the final book of his that I had in my Audible library.



Given that this book is now 9 years old, I’m getting quite used to reading older books for preparation reasons. This had a lot of stylistical approaches which I’ve seen in the genre before, but had not seen in Mark’s work. The book had several distinctive sections from different perspectives that were running parallel to each other, which was separated into separate parts with the central mystery of the book being drip fed to the reader through these perspectives.



This approach really helped the book and allowed for the tension to continue throughout, although at times I did think to myself when are you going to tell us what happened, but I think that was just reflecting the character’s nervousness in doing so in the book.



When a couple go on a European tour ending after their tickets are mysteriously stolen and they are chucked off a train, what happens to them afterwards creates a tension that I was not expecting and it gets darker and darker throughout until you get to the point from the villain’s perspective and the definite horror overtones that Mark subtly includes were pertinent in this one and somewhat reminiscent of Hansel and Gretel.



I really enjoyed this book as it was different to anything I’d read of Mark’s before and hopefully what I learnt about it in the interview will intrigue readers, too, although I won’t say that here.
