Gitsham’s Web

My year with Paul Gitsham’s work draws to a close. This year I’ve read seven of his nine DI Jones books, primarily in preparation for my first appearance at a festival – this years Crime Cymru and we were able to discuss the construction of an audiobook together with his narrator, Malk Williams. Having just finished Web of Lies, I can now speak to Paul directly about the series for a book on police procedurals.



Having just heard Paul’s letter to the reader at the end of this book, I’ve discovered where the inspiration came from. As in all of Paul’s books the plotline was highly complex, well structured and well researched. At 13 hours this is around Paul’s average length for books, as he seems to base the length on realistic depictions of how long a particular case would take to resolve and gives the reader lots of options for suspects. In this case there were many, with many different motivations.



I must admit, though, I did miss the family elements of the book that have become part of the series. Although they were there, they weren’t as prevalent as in previous books, but as you get further and further through the series, I imagine there are less things to say and after all, the central case is the most important element.



I’m looking forward to talking to Paul about the ups and downs of creating this character and although this will be the third time I have interviewed him directly, I’m sure there will be something new to say that my readers will be interested in. At least I hope so. Thanks to Paul for all of the support that he’s given me throughout this year and for the free copies, which has allowed me undertake my research so extensively.
