Lets Talk Comics, Vol. 1

 
This article covers recent news and trends in comics, as well as random topics that I just feel like making fun of.  Enjoy!

Note: last week I published this article as Not 10: Best Things In Comics.  I decided to change the name because, while I do enjoy making fun of things, I did not love being almost exclusively negative and could already see it limiting what I could write.  This article was almost entirely written when I decided to make the change, so I left it mostly as is.  I hope you enjoy the slight format change and let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions in the comments.








1 Low Effort Diversity Comics




I am a big believer that diversity is a strength .  Dozens of studies have shown an ironclad link between diversity and stronger performances for companies .  And some of these comics highlighting diversity have actually been excellent.  Women of Marvel  (2021) contains one of the best Black Cat stories ever created.  My issue is with books like Marvel Voices: Pride (2023), which feel more like an exercise in box-checking virtue signaling than a genuine celebration of diversity and Marvel’s incredibly deep bench of interesting LGBT characters and creators.









2 Killing Ms. Marvel




Ms. Marvel appeared in 37 of 3204 panels in  Amazing Spider-Man  before they killed her .  Who possibly thought killing off this character in another hero’s book with almost no exposure right before she has a movie come out was going to go over well with fans?  I am guessing the same people who thought marriage made Spider-Man unrelatable , but making him a multinational billionaire CEO was perfectly fine.












3 Screenrant Clickbait
A. Scarlet Spider was definitely not the most controversial part of this movie , B. 5 randos being mad online is not a controversy Screenrant.  Do better, be better










4 “Motherhood”
J Scott Campbell said he drew this woman with extra large breasts “to convey motherhood” and I have not been able to stop laughing at that idea ever since.  I like (some of) Campbell’s art, but that is a wild, hilarious justification for fan service.












5 Frank Miller’s Latest Covers
Frank, you are one of the greatest comic book writers and artists of all time.  Your work on Daredevil fundamentally redefined the character.  But this…Its gonna be a no for me dog.










6 Greg Land
How does this porn tracing , artist plagiarizing , same female face using hack keep getting work?  This is a young woman who just lost the love of her life, Greg.  Why does her face look like you copied it out of your favorite back issue of Hustler?












7   Spider-Man  #1 Homages
For the love of god, please stop making these!  This once doesn’t even make any sense.  Why is a vampire crouching in the middle of a Spider’s web?










8 2nd Printing Exclusive Virgin Variants
They really will try anything besides letting Peter Parker be happy, huh?












9 The Flash
I do not know how bad the cancelled Batwoman movie was, but I kind of doubt it was lose $200 million bad.  Any chance studios look at this and decide it may make more sense to bring back smaller scale, more mid budget films ?  Lol, yeah right










10  Rachel Brosnahan As Lois Lane
No complaints, this is actually phenomenal casting.  If she is even half as good as she was in Marvelous Ms. Maisel, audiences will be in for a real treat
