Self-Published Authors Appreciation Week 2023: Interview with a Character

Sometimes I read a book and think about how much fun it would be to interview the main character. Of course, the fact that these are characters and not real people usually puts a pin in that idea. I’ve gotten lucky today, though: I am pleased to say that I’ve been able to interview Elburn Burr, Loremaster and main character of The Hero Interviews by Andi Ewington!

W&S: Hi Elburn! Thank you for taking time away from your questing to chat with me about The Hero Interviews! I’ll try to avoid causing any snarky subtitles. 1

First, can you tell us a little about yourself and what you are up to lately?

Elburn : Although I may look like a Wizard, I’m actually a Loremaster—traveling the  realm in search of the truth behind the word ‘hero’.2 I must admit, I’m a little more used to asking the difficult questions—rather than being the one asked them.3 Loremastering is the fine art of getting close to danger without actually being anywhere near it in the first place. Currently, I’m taking a bit of a sabbatical from my day-to-day interviews to write a diary about my near-adventures. 4

W&S: You come across some interesting characters in your travels. Do you have a  favorite interview?

Elburn: Now you are asking the difficult question! I’d probably have to say Dorn the Barbarian— only because I don’t want to get on the wrong side of a furious nose put out of joint. 5

W&S: Which interview caused you the most difficulty?

Elburn: Snodgrass the Archer—the language barrier between Goblins and Humans is enough to  make a ‘Barker’ cry. 6

W&S: Back to those subtitles: they definitely added some extra panache to your interviews. What inspired those fantastic additions?

Elburn: They are an excellent way to add a layer of commentary to the facts I hear. Admittedly,  this can come across as sarcasm—but then, I do hear some things that would give you a  heart attack.7 The inspiration came about by accident; they were simply my doodled footnotes I made while listening to my interviewee—I was initially going to remove them before my journal was published, but I thought they provided an amusing insight into my state of mind at the time. 8

W&S: Following your interviews, you’re now hard at work on your diaries. Will you be willing to share those at some point?

Elburn: Only if you’re a Halfling Rogue with the means, motive, and a Lucky Potion in your pocket—I jest! I’m sure ‘The Hero Diaries’ will find the light of day soon enough. 9

W&S: What would you say to people who might be a little hesitant to read off the beaten path, so to speak?

Elburn: Stay on the beaten path—it’s obvious you don’t have the stomach for true adventure— leave that to the real heroes and heroines. 10

W&S: What are some of your favorite self-published books?

Elburn: So you want to cast a Fireball? ’By B. I. G. Mistake . There and back again—why did I go upstairs in the first place ? By I. F.Orget. Steal Magnolias By Flower T. Heif.

W&S: I’ll let you get back to those diaries. Thanks for chatting with me!
