Welcome back to another installment of Gutters with Gio: Comic gab for life in between the panels.
Comic book reprints of popular (or classic) issues are great, but nothing beats a facsimile edition. Being able to read an older comic in all its glory (original ads included) resonates in a more substantial way and might be the closest some of us will get to owning these pivotal stories. These special reprints typically increase 5 to 20 percent in price as well, which is just more incentive to seek them out when they hit your LCS.
So, why not get a bit nostalgic this Summer and take a look at the upcoming Marvel and DC facsimile comics releasing this season. Most of the books will have a foil variant for a few bucks more, so keep an eye out for those!
The Incredible Hulk #180 & #181 – 1st Wolverine – Originally released 1974
Have you ever wanted to own the first cameo and full appearance of the Wolverine? Well, now you can! These two comics were released back to back a few weeks ago, and are still available in most shops and online for cover price. I recently saw a 6.0 CGC slab of issue 181 going for $4,000 dollars, which is steep, but how about 4 bucks for a facsimile of the same book?
The Omega Men #3 – 1st Lobo – Originally released 1983
The main man we all know and fracking love made his debut appearance in this comic. One of my favorite characters and a book that I often recommend if someone is looking for a great undervalued DC key. You can get a 9.8 copy for around $400 (maybe less) or pick up the facsimile for $4 dollars when it drops on August 1st.
Werewolf By Night #33 – 2nd Moon Knight – Originally released 1975
If you are a fan of either of these characters, then picking this book up is a no brainer. You can own the second appearance of Moon Knight and an issue where he is pitted against the Werewolf by Night! I’m looking forward to another MCU Halloween special this Fall (perhaps featuring these two characters) but until then, I’ll pick up a copy of this special reprint when it releases on August 9th.
Giant Sized X-Men #1 – Several 1st appearances – Originally released 1975
One of the most well known comics (and covers) of the bronze age, Giant Sized X-Men #1 features the first appearance of many mutants we grow up loving (or hating) and is a grail book for many collectors. Mid-grade copies of this book can be quite expensive, but you can get this facsimile for current cover price on August 16th.
The Amazing Spider-Man #300 – 1st full Venom – Originally released 1988
The next book on this list probably doesn’t require a blurb, as it is one of the most homaged covers (if not the most) ever. The title features the first full appearance of the wildly popular Venom. ASM #300 is an important story in the web-slingers history, and a recent search found 9.8 CGC copies going for around $4,000 dollars. If that’s too much, why not pick up the facsimile when it drops on August 23rd?
Detective Comics #58 – 1st Penguin – Originally released 1941
Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin, is undoubtedly one of the most popular Batman villains to hit the panels. He is getting a new series from Tom King next month, but until then, why not pick up his 1st appearance? You can snag this awesome reprint for (you guessed it) cover price on August 27th.
Wonder Woman #1 – George Perez Cover & New Origin – Originally released 1986
This classic cover by the late (and great) George Perez brought with it a new origin for the amazon princess, and helped revitalized the character. This would be a great book to pick up if you find the original while you’re out there hunting, but if you want a cheap copy you can get for cover price, then head to your local comic shop when it comes out on August 29th.
Batman #1 – Origin of Batman – Originally released 1940
This comic is the origin of Batman alongside a few first appearances. This is a sayless moment so all I’ll say is that we all know this one, and we can all own a copy of this monumental classic when it is released on September 12th.
ROM #1 – 1st Rom and others – Originally released 1979
Last on this list is a Marvel book from the Bronze age that most casual fans probably aren’t aware of. This book features the first appearance of ROM , the space knight, and a few other characters as well. It has a cover that evokes classic 80s nostalgia for me, and you can own a facsimile copy of this book right before Summer officially ends, on September 20th.
Thank you so much for reading! There are other facsimile comics that were released last month, and earlier this month (that aren’t featured on this list) so look out for those as well. Also be sure to let me know in the comments below which books you’re excited to pick up, or if you own any of the originals! I’ll be back next month with another topic, but until then you can listen to some of my thoughts on art (in other mediums) on The State of the Arts Podcast.
