Do Authors Have A Barbie Complex?

I just saw the Barbie movie with my wife and
daughter, each going for their second time. It was rich with many take-aways,
most of them positive and encouraging for women, some a bit critical about men,
but overall, a really creative attempt at some deep commentary about our
identity, sense of purpose, the burden women face, what makes us human, and how
we judge others and ourselves. Authors can learn from this.

Barbie learns:

* She can strive to do it all — or nothing at
all – if she chooses to.

* She can be ordinary and that is ok.

* She can also be crazy beautiful and that is
okay.

* There is no one way she has to live and that
no specific way is necessarily great or perfect.

Authors can learn from Barbie in the sense
that being an author can be amazing but it also comes with its perils. Yes,
other people judge you. You compete with others. And your sense of worth can
easily be measured.

Barbie’s looks, as she learns, can be an asset
or a burden, and that she is not just her looks or her career. She learns to be
happy with whom she is and to open up to the concept that life isn’t perfect,
not even for one with beauty and brains.

Well, writers, you are more than the words
that you pump out. You live real lives, have real needs, desires, concerns,
challenges, and joys. Experience life fully and incorporate your writings into
who you are but don’t feel they have to define you.
