BIG INDIES FOR LOW PRICES

Welcome back to another installment of Gutters with Gio: Comic gab for life in between the panels.
Summer is coming to an end, and with the cooler days approaching, I thought I’d talk about some hot indie titles that have recently cooled down. These are popular titles that have decreased in price with the potential to go back up. If you’re an avid collector, then you’re probably aware of all of these titles, but here is an update on how much they’re going for now.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN – BOOM! STUDIOS COMICS
I thought I’d start with a book that a lot of readers have been speculating on for a few years now. This immensely popular series by Eisner winner James Tynion the 4 th and Werther Dell’Edera has gone up and down in price a lot, with issue one CGC 9.8 slabs going for over $1’000 and NM raw books selling at around $600. A recent search has this book going for about half that price ($300-$350) for a raw issue and NM CGC copies at $700-$800. This is one of the best ongoing series out right now and there was news of the title being optioned for a television series , so I feel confident that it’ll raise in price when casting is announced, or a trailer is dropped.

STILLWATER – SKYBOUND/IMAGE COMICS
Next is a series by another popular writer, Chip Zdarsky ( Daredevil , Batman ) with art by Ramon K Perez — Stillwater is a book that had a lot of heat during its first story arc. The first issue was going for about $50 in a raw copy, but now you can pick it up for $7 to $10. A comic about a town where no one can die is ripe for a TV adaptation, and with Zdarsky’s acclaim increasing, I can see this book jumping back up in price in the future. Regardless of spec, this is a great title that’s worth the read.

ICE CREAM MAN – IMAGE COMICS
This is an eerie and oftentimes unsettling title by W. Maxwell Prince and Martin Morazzo, and is another fan favorite. An amazing anthology series that was at one time optioned for a television series. Although that was seemingly canceled (with no new information on a live action project) this is still a book that is fetching a premium price. Going for a couple hundred dollars (NM raw copy) a few years ago, but now you can score the first issue for slightly less, at $100 to $150; the real deal would be a 9.8 slab, which was recently sold for under $300, and went for almost double that in the past.

THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH – IMAGE COMICS
This is another book from the popular writer James Tynion the 4 th; featuring fantastic unconventional art by Martin Simmonds . DOT is set in a world where conspiracy theories can become reality, and in my opinon, this series has the makings of a great TV show. Even without any film spec, this title was selling for $30-$50 when it was released, but now you can get a CGC 9.8 copy for the same ($45-$50) price. I’m not sure if this book will ever go back up in price, but $45 for a NM slab is an inexpensive buy in for one of the best indie series out right now.

STRAY DOGS – IMAGE COMICS
Last on this list is a book that everyone was talking about when it came out a few years ago. Stray Dogs , by Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner, won over collectors with its charming art (reminiscent of old school Don Bluth Disney drawings) and spooky story. Fans could not stop talking about the plethora of amazing horror movie homage variants , and the first printing of issue one was going for $150 to $200. A recent search shows that raw first printings have sold for $30 with CGC 9.8 copies selling for under $100. This would make a great (adult) animated feature, and if that was to happen, then I’m sure this comic (and some of the variants) will jump back up in price.

Thanks so much for reading! Let me know if you own any of these books, or if there’s an indie series that you’d recommend picking up right now. I hope you had a great Summer! I’ll be back next month with some tips for attending the New York Comic Con, but until then, you can read more of my articles here.
