September always brings with it a profusion of news about crime-fiction prizes, but this last week seems to have exceeded expectations. In addition to the Bouchercon prize results , we now have the shortlist of contestants for Scotland’s 2023 McIlvanney Prize:
• Squeaky Clean , by Callum McSorley (Pushkin)
• The Second Murderer , by Denise Mina (Vintage)
• Cast a Cold Eye , by Robbie Morrison (Macmillan)
• The Devil’s Playground , by Craig Russell (Little, Brown)
The three-times-as-lengthy longlist of contenders, announced back in mid-June, can be revisited here .
As Mystery Fanfare explains , the latest McIlvanney Prize recipient will be declared during the latest Bloody Scotland festival, scheduled for September 15-17 in Stirling, Scotland. This award is named in honor of William McIlvanney , author of the novel Laidlaw .

Meanwhile, the Australian Crime Writers Association last week announced the recipients of its 2023 Ned Kelly Awards (aka “Neddies”) in four different categories.
Best Crime Fiction: Exiles , by Jane Harper (Pan Macmillan Australia)
Best Debut Crime Fiction: Wake , by Shelley Burr (Hachette Australia)
Best International Crime Fiction (published in Australia): The Lemon Man , by Keith Bruton (Brash)
Best True Crime: Betrayed , by Sandi Logan (Hachette Australia)
