Inspired Club

This month will be the first time in a while that I shall be attending an online event for the Inspire Library book club. The book club reads all genres, but I normally attend when crime fiction books are there, or when I’m asked to host it, as one of the 6 hosts throughout the East Midlands.

Ellery Lloyd are an interesting pair of writers and their experience in magazine writing shows in this plot. In the days of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, everyone wants to know what is happening in celebrity lives and this book, alongside many others in this sub-genre, seems to have captured the fascination with this. Combining this with a closed circle plot on an isolated island, leads this book to have lots of the enjoyable cliches that many readers find interesting. This is why it’s a good choice for the book group to discuss.

With the number of characters in the book, though, the plot becomes highly complex and at times your incredulity has to stretch. Although the plot line was well drawn and resolved itself over several hours of writing, which shows that it was well planned by the pair, for me, as someone who is learning how to write, the complexity of this plot will teach me things and I’ll be really interested to know what the rest of the group think.
