Preparing for Mother
On the 2nd of March T.M. Logan is to release his latest book The Mother. Catching up with his books before this is released next week was an intriguing element of research for my own book on psychological thrillers. I think one of the questions I shall ask him is, given the plot of Trust Me is about two women on a train, one of them leaving a baby with the other showing the power of being a mother must be one of his over arching themes, but I don’t suppose I will know that until I have read the new one.
As psychological thrillers go, this is a bit of a hybrid one as it can also be argued to be a police procedural as well, The Holiday could have been too.
Logan seems to like his books to have the police in the background somewhere. With the tension and the fast paced tone and enough twists to create a rollercoaster, this is definitely written like a psychological thriller with the police outsider Helen.
As you go through the story you wonder why the woman left the baby with Helen, don’t worry this is not a spoiler as this happens in chapter two. As the book opens you think that it is going to be a domestic suspense with a bit of drama too. It soon develops into a high concept novel with electronic trackers and really complex characters with a number of police procedural cliché’s in there. You can see that Logan is a police procedural fan, his writing has really developed, you can see why he has been chosen by Channel 5 to have two of his books adapted.
Although this was not my favourite of his work, as it will take a lot to beat The Holiday for me, the characters are it’s most redeeming feature, alongside the tension throughout the book which keeps you wanting to turn the page or at least listen to it. The single narrator on this occasion really helped out in masking the plot a bit as well.
Looking forward to reading his previous stand alone to The Mother ready for my interview with him. It’s been a really interesting year so far and I can’t quite believe how far I have got. Great to be supporting a local author to me as we both live in the same City.
It will be great to be back at a live event at Waterstones once again, it is like life is almost back to normal after the three years we have all had.
