Fourth in Line

This morning, after several hours last night, where I had to leave the book near the end to stop me from falling asleep, because as it’s an audiobook, if you go past 11pm, it can be hard to not relax too much with someone reading to you. That’s why it always works with kids, too. But, I’ve gotten into the habit these days of waking up early and finishing books, even if I’m not yet fully awake and have to rewind it several times. In the past, this has gotten me into trouble when I’ve woken up after something dramatic has happened.



This is why I did this with this one, because of the dramatic kind of waves hitting the shore process that Shindler seems to have adopted. With multiple killings in the book, the peaks and troughs keep you on your toes, particularly when you see it through the emotions of a character and with the emotions of Finn as one of the Will’s major writing planks, you become aware of how good he is at focussing on emotion.



This book was just as complex as his third one and reminded me of the tense nature of his first book, too. There are lots of layers to this one, which will likely be seen in later books. One of his talents is the connecting plot points in the series that will keep his readers wanting to read on, although I’m not sure how much more he can put Alex through.



This plot has a lot of themes in it, which will resonate with a lot of different readers, although some of them may disturb, with indirect references to iconic cases and subjects that get people talking, Will is showing that the idea that crime fiction can comment on society and the way that crime impacts upon it is one of the main reasons why I read crime fiction as a former criminology student and is probably why I’m now writing about it, too.



I’m really looking forward to interviewing him about it in the coming days and to have caught up in full with another police procedural series I feel more like a normal reader and not just a reviewer.
