The Most Fire Cover From This Wednesday’s Releases
9/13/2023
NO INCENTIVE VARIANTS OR STORE EXCLUSIVE VARIANTS ARE COVERED IN THIS ARTICLE. THIS FEATURE IS ABOUT COVER AESTHETICS, ONLY, AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SPEC.
HOWEVER… For this week’s INCENTIVES and EXCLUSIVES needs, check out the weekly “COVER LOVERS” podcast with TEAM NERD HERD and me, RIGHT NOW!

Weekly Rundown…
Well folks, this may go down as the shortest Cover Fire of all time as this is NOT a strong week for covers. However, that said, there are a few gems. No other notes to speak of, so let’s just dive right in…
And this week’s winner is…

Star Wars: Obi Wan Kenobi #1c
PUBLISHED: Marvel – 9/13/23
ARTIST: Taurin Clarke
I think Clarke really nails the feel of Tatooine on this. There is a grit and haze to the render that really works with the color palette. The detail is spot on and while this feels a little like covers we’ve already gotten, this is definitely the best cover offered this week.

Batman and Robin #1b
PUBLISHED: DC – 9/12/23
ARTIST: Stanley ‘Artgerm’ Lau
Another extremely sexy ‘Germ and he definitely hits on this one, but it is his same pose he does so often. While that might not be a bad thing and this cover is clearly a “winner,” it just isn’t new or unique enough to grab the win.

Bloodborne: Bleak Dominion #1d
PUBLISHED: Titan – 9/13/23
ARTIST: Yoshioka
This thing is just all kinds of disturbing and creepy. Granted, I’m a sucker for a great macabre cover, but this one is particularly unsettling and the details and depth are outstanding. I also particularly like the level of intricacy in the background that give the scene some context; that is so often missing on covers, these days.

Darkwing Duck: Negaduck #1a
PUBLISHED: Dynamite – 9/13/23
ARTIST: Josh Middleton
Middleton on a “Toon” book? Yes, please!!! Josh’s unique flavor lends itself quite well to Negaduck and while kid books might not be everyone’s taste, it is tough to deny how great this piece of art is. Again, much like the above cover, the scene detail and context add great perspective and depth to this composition.

Looney Tunes #274
PUBLISHED: DC – 9/12/23
ARTIST: Robert Pope / Scott McRae
This is absolute classic WB animation. There is little else to say about this one. Unless you just don’t care for Looney Tunes, I fail to see what else one could want from a cover such as this. Porky’s and Daffy’s personalities are dead on, here. The Indiana Jones vibe is a nice touch, too.

Sonic the Hedgehog: 900th Adventure #1a
PUBLISHED: IDW – 9/13/23
ARTIST: Tracy Yardley
Classic speedy Sonic art on this one and while I enjoy the art on almost all of the covers for this “900th Adventure” book, this one was the most well done and most akin to those old classic Archie Comics Sonic comics from back in good ol’ days (especially that checkerboard backdrop).

WORTH A 2nd LOOK

Dark Ride #8b – Maan House – Image – 9/13/23

All of the covers for this series have been fun and cool, but this one is a little darker than most of them and I like that about this one.

Creepshow #1a _ Guillem March – Image – 9/13/23

The Gerber baby frightened out of their wits… awesome!

Creepshow #1b – Becky Cloonan – Image – 9/13/23

The stained glass motif is well used on this Creepshow book. It is actually a pretty disturbing image if you look closely at it. I’m almost surprised they got away with this on such a mainstream book.

Ghost Rider #18a – Bjorn Barends – Marvel – 9/13/23

This is a really excellent Barends with tons of detail, but his style feels a little overly digital and static to me. However, that said, he really nails the little things on this one and it is really dynamic as a result.

Werewolf by Night #1c – Adam Hughes – Marvel – 9/13/23

This is only on here because it’s Hughes and people will want it because of that fact, but I sadly think this is one of his weakest efforts.

Well, as I said… shortest Cover Fire of all time, but I’m not going to just choose books in order to fill up the list. I hope you liked my choices. Since it is so short, I’m sure I left something off that you liked, so drop in a comment and let me know what it is that I missed. Until next time, stay cool, be good to each other, thanks for reading and happy hunting.
